Tim McGraw Songwriter Helps Rescue Nashville Foxes as Bison Return to Mexico Reserve
Johnny Mac shares five good news stories: 48 bison were reintroduced after 200 years to the El Santuario Wildlife Reserve within Mexico’s Cuatro Ciénegas Biosphere Reserve, where their hooves, coats, and dung help break compacted soil, spread seeds, and fertilize the desert oasis ecosystem. In Nashville, 78-year-old songwriter Jerry, who has had songs recorded by Tim McGraw, has spent seven years trapping foxes suffering from a worsening mange epidemic and bringing them to Walden’s Puddle Animal Rescue; by September the rescue rehabilitated over 60 foxes, surpassing last year’s 44. Three Harvard students created Rumble Rims, an infrared eye-tracking headset that provides a 2–3 minute concussion assessment with real-time results on a coach’s app. In London, 934 of 1,188 people set a Vulcan salute record for Star Trek Day with actor Martin Quinn attending. Linda regained the Guinness record for largest matching salt-and-pepper packet collection with 754 pairs.

1
00:00:03.160 --> 00:00:09.349
Calaroga Shark Media. Hey there, I'm Johnny Manc with five

2
00:00:09.369 --> 00:00:13.250
good news stories. For 200 years, the Cuatro Cienegas Biosphere

3
00:00:13.269 --> 00:00:16.829
Reserve in the desert of northern Mexico had no bison.

4
00:00:17.609 --> 00:00:20.370
That reserve is one of the most ecologically unusual places

5
00:00:20.429 --> 00:00:24.440
in North America, a desert oasis fed by ancient underground springs,

6
00:00:24.899 --> 00:00:27.539
home to species found nowhere else on Earth. Biologists treat

7
00:00:27.559 --> 00:00:29.760
it like a living museum of what the continent used

8
00:00:29.800 --> 00:00:34.060
to be, but for two centuries, no bison. Well, good news.

9
00:00:34.179 --> 00:00:37.960
Last year, 48 bison were brought to the El Centroario

10
00:00:38.100 --> 00:00:42.320
Wildlife Reserve, a protected core area within the reserve's 324

11
00:00:42.320 --> 00:00:46.520
square miles. What happened next gets ecologists excited. You see,

12
00:00:46.770 --> 00:00:49.229
bison hooves are dense and hard, and when they move

13
00:00:49.270 --> 00:00:51.990
across desert soil that has compacted over generations, they break

14
00:00:52.030 --> 00:00:54.960
it open. allowing water and seeds to reach depths they

15
00:00:54.979 --> 00:00:58.549
couldn't before. A bison's coat acts like a traveling seed bank,

16
00:00:58.600 --> 00:01:00.609
picking up plant material in one part of the landscape

17
00:01:00.649 --> 00:01:04.450
and depositing it miles away. The dung fertilizes soil that

18
00:01:04.489 --> 00:01:07.469
had gone unfertilized for two centuries. You do all that,

19
00:01:08.109 --> 00:01:12.409
and things start to grow. Jerry is a songwriter in Nashville.

20
00:01:12.469 --> 00:01:15.019
He's had some of his songs recorded by Tim McGraw.

21
00:01:15.659 --> 00:01:17.739
He's 78 years old, and for the last seven years,

22
00:01:17.780 --> 00:01:19.719
he has spent a big portion of his time driving

23
00:01:19.760 --> 00:01:25.170
around Nashville... trapping sick red foxes. Apparently Nashville is fighting

24
00:01:25.230 --> 00:01:28.049
a mange epidemic and it's getting worse. Mange is caused

25
00:01:28.109 --> 00:01:32.250
by skin mites. In a single fox, pretty treatable. The

26
00:01:32.290 --> 00:01:36.299
problem is mange spreads rapidly between animals living in close proximity.

27
00:01:37.060 --> 00:01:40.620
And with development in Tennessee, the foxes are getting increasingly crowded.

28
00:01:41.000 --> 00:01:46.060
Development has shrunk their habitat. And rat poison, used against rats, well,

29
00:01:46.379 --> 00:01:48.980
weakens the immune system of the foxes, making them more

30
00:01:49.040 --> 00:01:52.540
vulnerable when the mites arrive. So Jerry tries to trap them.

31
00:01:52.560 --> 00:01:55.560
He works in neighborhoods across Nashville, sets traps, checks them.

32
00:01:55.739 --> 00:01:57.750
And when he finds a fox, he brings it to

33
00:01:58.049 --> 00:02:01.730
Walden's Puddle Animal Rescue, which can help the foxes. He

34
00:02:01.750 --> 00:02:03.989
told the Tennessean, mange is treatable. If we catch them,

35
00:02:04.049 --> 00:02:06.609
they can have a healthy, happy life. This is not

36
00:02:06.629 --> 00:02:11.110
a part-time hobby. In August, he logged 234 volunteer hours.

37
00:02:11.509 --> 00:02:14.680
Do some math. There's 168 hours in a week. And,

38
00:02:14.699 --> 00:02:16.879
you know, you sleep and you eat and you go

39
00:02:16.900 --> 00:02:18.520
to the bathroom and you do other things. So that's

40
00:02:18.560 --> 00:02:22.099
a lot of time, right? 234 volunteer hours. I mean,

41
00:02:22.120 --> 00:02:25.800
if you work a 40-hour week, you worked 40, 80, 120, 160,

42
00:02:25.800 --> 00:02:29.759
maybe 180 or so. So that's a lot. By September,

43
00:02:30.639 --> 00:02:34.490
Puddle Rescue had rehabilitated more than 60 foxes this year,

44
00:02:34.719 --> 00:02:37.110
surpassing last year's total of 44, and we still got

45
00:02:37.129 --> 00:02:40.469
a couple months to go. Nice job. According to the CDC,

46
00:02:40.490 --> 00:02:43.110
approximately two and a half million American high school students

47
00:02:43.150 --> 00:02:46.150
experience a sports-related concussion every year. The challenge on the

48
00:02:46.189 --> 00:02:49.430
sidelines is that assessment is largely subjective. You know, you

49
00:02:49.469 --> 00:02:52.289
got a trainer, a coach asking questions. You watch how

50
00:02:52.330 --> 00:02:54.229
a kid moves. You make a judgment call. I've been

51
00:02:54.289 --> 00:02:56.870
a volunteer coach. Yeah, I've been there. It's really hard

52
00:02:56.909 --> 00:02:59.460
to do. And the kid will always tell you they're fine.

53
00:02:59.500 --> 00:03:01.259
The kid always wants to go back in. Well, three

54
00:03:01.319 --> 00:03:04.340
Harvard students set out to change all this. They have

55
00:03:04.360 --> 00:03:08.520
built a headset called Rumble Rims. Rumble Rims use infrared

56
00:03:08.580 --> 00:03:12.830
light to track eye movements during a series of oculomotor tasks,

57
00:03:12.969 --> 00:03:15.889
like following a moving target. Holding a fixed gaze, making

58
00:03:15.949 --> 00:03:18.650
rapid directional shifts, the eye movements reveal what the brain

59
00:03:18.710 --> 00:03:21.789
is doing in a way that a concussion reliably disrupts.

60
00:03:22.509 --> 00:03:25.379
The test takes two to three minutes. The results appear

61
00:03:25.469 --> 00:03:28.139
on the coach's mobile app in real time. You can

62
00:03:28.159 --> 00:03:31.460
make the right call. Nice job there. For Star Trek Day,

63
00:03:31.759 --> 00:03:34.280
a group gathered at the Science Museum in London to

64
00:03:34.319 --> 00:03:37.969
attempt the Guinness World Record for most people performing a

65
00:03:38.039 --> 00:03:41.169
Vulcan salute simultaneously. You would think the Vulcans would hold

66
00:03:41.210 --> 00:03:43.849
this record, but no. If you don't know what this is,

67
00:03:44.449 --> 00:03:46.750
This is from the original Star Trek. Basically, you separate

68
00:03:46.789 --> 00:03:49.469
your fingers into two pairs and extend your thumb. So

69
00:03:49.490 --> 00:03:51.050
you have to have like two of your fingers and

70
00:03:51.069 --> 00:03:53.689
a gap on the other two fingers. It's kind of

71
00:03:53.770 --> 00:03:56.319
hard to do unless you learn how to do it.

72
00:03:56.349 --> 00:03:57.789
I'm a Trekkie, so I figured out how to do

73
00:03:57.810 --> 00:03:59.770
it at some point. Guess how many people did the

74
00:03:59.789 --> 00:04:02.449
Vulcan salute? Wrong. 1,188 people attended. 934 of them successfully

75
00:04:02.469 --> 00:04:03.449
did the salute. So 934 out of 1,100 and change.

76
00:04:03.469 --> 00:04:05.050
That'll show you. It is not that easy to do.

77
00:04:12.939 --> 00:04:16.129
Martin Quinn, who is the current actor playing Scotty in

78
00:04:16.250 --> 00:04:19.649
Star Trek Strange New Worlds. He was there. Fans noted

79
00:04:19.709 --> 00:04:22.230
for an attempt lasting only 60 seconds. There was a

80
00:04:22.290 --> 00:04:26.680
lot of excitement. And congratulations to Linda. She got her

81
00:04:26.740 --> 00:04:31.019
Guinness World Record back. The record is for largest collection

82
00:04:31.420 --> 00:04:34.360
of salt and pepper packets. I don't know. Maybe I

83
00:04:34.379 --> 00:04:36.339
should go upstairs and check my junk drawer. I might

84
00:04:36.379 --> 00:04:38.990
be able to break this one without even trying. Linda

85
00:04:39.029 --> 00:04:44.129
doesn't throw hers away. She has 754 matching pairs, which

86
00:04:44.209 --> 00:04:47.610
means there's 754 sets where the salt packet and the

87
00:04:47.629 --> 00:04:50.860
pepper packet are from the same source and design. I

88
00:04:50.920 --> 00:04:53.860
feel like I might have that upstairs. She first won

89
00:04:53.899 --> 00:04:55.319
the title in 2024 with 494 pairs. Then this other guy, Sonny,

90
00:04:55.399 --> 00:04:56.939
broke the record. He had 594. So Linda got back

91
00:04:56.980 --> 00:05:04.870
into it. and is now back on top by a

92
00:05:04.910 --> 00:05:08.509
margin of 160 pairs. She's been collecting these for years.

93
00:05:08.529 --> 00:05:12.610
The habit started with a single pair from Arby's. Her

94
00:05:12.670 --> 00:05:15.889
current favorites in the collection are the Hawaiian shirt-themed packets

95
00:05:15.990 --> 00:05:19.290
from Hawaiian Airlines. She said, I find collecting very interesting

96
00:05:19.329 --> 00:05:21.480
and fun, and have a goal of a world record title,

97
00:05:21.569 --> 00:05:25.279
makes this hobby even more fun and interesting. And those

98
00:05:25.399 --> 00:05:27.220
are your five good news stories for today. Have a

99
00:05:27.240 --> 00:05:27.620
great day.
